I spend my days drawing, designing, dreaming and pretending I'm a glam rock star, actually, I don't pretend, I convince myself... I am infact a twenty year old Prince from England who went a little mad. I'm currently getting my life back on track once I find the right direction. Come get lost with me! Oh and my name is Aaron - ahoy!
In light of all this SOPA news, I thought I’d post this… I’m not saying I’m all for illegal downloading and I know next to nothing about this SOPA hoopla but I’m aware it regards piracy.
OK. Music piracy and illegal downloading! - Everyone I know is guilty of such shenanigans but despite billions? of albums being illegally downloaded, artists and record labels surely cannot be hit THAT hard!?
Take Lily Allen for instance, she’s one artist I’m aware of that always spoke about her music being illegally downloaded, infact I’m pretty sure she quit / took a break from music because of it (correct me if I’m wrong.)
I’m not her biggest fan but I know she has a huge fan base. Her singles from years ago are still played daily on TV and radio and it’s a fact that she’s had numerous number 1 and high charting singles and albums around the world. Now let’s take her first album for instance.
Wikipedia tells me it sold 5 million copies worldwide. Taking into account albums cost what?.. Between £10 and £15? Let’s say £10, that means that her first album has made £50,000,000 alone. Then there’s extra income from radio play, tv play, live performances, public appearances, collaborations, tv shows, interviews, personal side projects etc. I know she doesn’t get ALL the money but between her and her label, they must get a fair chunk between them even with the loss of income from illegal downloads.
This doesn’t just apply to her ofcourse, it applies for the hundreds of musicians who have graced the charts even after a lot of their work has been downloaded illegally.

Also new artists with a less dedicated fanbase are suffering more because they don’t even break even and then they get dropped from their label
